What is a Junior Café Scientifique?

The Junior Café Scientifique is a new development which builds on the success of the British Café Scientifique movement and on successful French initiatives to provide a space and a format for young people to discuss the issues which are transforming our world.

They are not lessons, debating societies or science clubs, they are student-led discussions organised in an informal setting such as a cafeteria or common room to provide a platform for all pupils to get involved. Just as with the adult Café Scientifique, changing the venue changes the agenda, enabling students who would find it difficult or uninteresting to engage with scientific issues to get involved.

Successful Junior Cafés have covered subjects such as Exploring Gender Differences, Genes and Evolution and Will Robots Have Feelings?.

The founder of the Junior Café, Pablo Jensen, gave a talk at the international conference in Newcastle upon Tyne. A powerpoint presentation of this talk is available on his website.
